Canadian Poptress Carly Rae Jepsen is no beginner when it comes to making pristinely pop music.  Between the commercial success of Kiss, the critical mastery of E.MO.TION, and the creative expansion of Dedicated; the 36-year-old is creating a catalog of pop-blueprint music that charms you with its, kitschy lyricism, brilliant sonics, and versatility of enjoyment.  However, just like she is more than a “Call Me Maybe” one-hit-wonder – she is more than just snappy synth-pop.

Her latest single “Western Wind” previews how Jepsen will explore a more delicate sound.  She alluded to the breezy new single’s wistful sound before its release.  First, she appropriately debuted the song at Coachella.  Afterward, a map of California took over the star’s social media.  This, with her new beachy 70’s look perfectly transitioned Jepsen into her new era of warm California love.

She Really Doesn’t Hate California After All

Producer, Rostam, of Vampire Weekend made a dreamy indie-pop composition with “Western Wind.”  Bongos guide the drumline combining with white-noise sweeps and Jepson’s angelic harmonies to bring in the chorus.  “Comin’ in like a western wind / Do you feel home from all directions?” sings Jepsen, giving gratitude to the west coast.  Never short of emotion in her music, the song has a kind love to it.  It feels like waves softly crashing onto the beach.  She brings in west coast lovin’ as the start to this new chapter.  The previous chapter ending with the sunset of “Now I Don’t Hate California After All” from her last project Dedicated Side B.  The track is a breathe of fresh air, like the one with a light breeze and birds chirping in the background.

Spring is the perfect metaphor for how Jepsen plans to bloom in this new era.  In the music video for “Western Wind” she captures that feeling beautifully.  Watch her, below, glow in flowery meadows and baby blue skies for “Western Wind”.
