British folk rock band Bear’s Den has been making music for over a decade now. Andrew Davie and Kevin Jones formed the band in 2012, with Andrew tackling lead vocals and guitar and Kevin on vocals, drums, bass, and guitar. And they’ve perfected their sound as a group making emotional, anthemic songs for us to sing along to.
Bear’s Den’s Latest Album: Blue Hours
In mid-May, Bear’s Den released their fifth studio album Blue Hours on Communion Records. Communion was founded by band member Kevin Jones along with the help of Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons and producer Ian Grimble. This record shows more electronic experimentation for the band, especially in the intro of the album’s title track. “Blue Hours” is an emotional song about communicating with someone that’s hard to reach. And it holds some of the band’s most vivid, personal songwriting yet. Check out the take “Spiders,” another track from Blue Hours here.
The Earlier Years of Bear’s Den
Now, let’s get you acquainted with some of the band’s earlier work. Their debut album, 2012’s Islands, remains their most popular. It contains some of the band’s biggest hits, like “Agape” and “Above The Clouds of Pompeii.” This era of Bear’s Den showcases a more stripped-back, raw acoustic folk sound. It’s not as clean a sound as they feature on Blue Hours, but the rough-around-the-edges nature of this era along with Davie’s delicate voice makes both styles equally charismatic and alluring. Check out the track “Sophie,” a fan favorite from Bear’s Den’s 2013 EP, Without/Within.
