Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer is currently finishing up the North American leg of their Take My Hand World Tour, and I got the opportunity to see them perform live when they made a stop in Chicago.
Post Animal Warmed up the Audience
5 Seconds of Summer stopped by Chicago’s Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on Saturday, July 16. The venue accommodates over 15,000 guests on its premises, and the show was sold out. The nice part is – the venue is entirely outdoors.
The doors opened at 5 pm, and the show started at 7 pm. I got there just in time to see the opening act, Post Animal, perform a few songs to get the crowd excited to see 5 Seconds of Summer. The band recently released their latest album Love Gibberish in May, and they took the opportunity to play some standout songs from it.

5 Seconds of Summer Take the Stage
At 8:20 pm, 5 Seconds of Summer took the stage. The public – which consisted of mainly teenagers and girls in their 20’s – went crazy right away. Lead vocalist Luke Hemmings, bass guitarist Calum Hood, drummer Ashton Irwin, and guitarist Michael Clifford all entered at the same time to say hi to the audience.
They all took their places on the big stage and started performing “No Shame,” one of the tracks in their last album, 2020’s CALM. From the start of the show, we could see how the lighting and screens showcased played along with the music and gave the venue even more life.
“Easier,” “More” and “Want You Back” were next on the setlist, making the audience sing along to every word. But when the next song started playing – “Disconnected,” which was released in 2014 and is one of the band’s first-ever songs – the crowd absolutely lost it. You could feel the nostalgia in the air, and some girls even started getting emotional.
It Was Luke’s Birthday
5 Seconds of Summer performed a total of 26 incredible songs, which is amazing. Alongside those songs, they also took the time in between performances to wish vocalist Luke Hemmings – who was turning 26 years old that day – a happy birthday. The audience started singing the happy birthday song right away, and Luke didn’t miss the chance to say thank you to the fans.
The band also performed a funny track that brings us back to 2014 – “Pizza.” The song simply has two lines: “Michael wants another slice,” and “pizza,” and lasts 40 seconds. But it was enough to make fans scream every single word back to the band.
The Setlist Took us All Over the Years
5 Seconds of Summer also played their newest singles: “Take My Hand,” “COMPLETE MESS,” “Me Myself and I” and “BLENDER,” which are part of their forthcoming album arriving later this year. Nevertheless, they also sang other throwbacks like “Amnesia, “Castaway,” ‘Waste The Night,” “Jet Black Heart” and “She Looks So Perfect.”
They closed the night by giving fans a mixture of emotions: First, they played the slow-paced ballad “Ghost of You,” but closed their performance with the uplifting and danceable “Youngblood,” a classic hit from 2018 that took over our speakers everywhere we went.
