Anderson .Paak: Why People Should Listen

From Humble Beginnings…

Way before he became the well-known artist we know him today as, Brandon Paak Anderson was born in Oxnard, California in 1986. Since he was a young kid, he was producing music or playing the drums in his bedroom. Music was always a big part of his troubled child-life, and he brought it with him into his adult life.  In 2011, Paak became homeless after he was let go from his job at a marijuana farm in Santa Barbra. After a few years of living without a home, he got his first break when Los Angeles based rappers from Sa-Ra and Dumbfounded hired him to write, edit, and shoot videos for them. This gave him the chance to release his first project, O.B.E Vol. 1. A mix of jazz, soul, and funk.

An Artist Who’s Born With It

In 2014, Paak released Venice, his debut album which was the first of many great projects. Two years later, he released well-known Malibu, a great album which combines soul, funk, jazz and hip-hop. The album was nominated for a Grammy, and while he did not win it, in 2018, he won a Grammy Award for best rap performance on the song Bubbling. He went on to win best R&B album in 2020, and best R&B performance for the great song “Come Home,” with Andre 3000. Since then, he’s been on numerous features with acclaimed artists like Dr Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Freddie Gibbs, and many others.

Why People Should Listen

Anderson. Paak is an important figure in today’s R&B and Hip-Hop culture, with his stand out records that blend old sounds with new ideas, he is an artist that is definitely worth following. I think it is safe to say that he is not going to drop out anytime soon. Considering his track record with features, you could possibly find him on any upcoming TDE or Griselda release. Or discover him as a feature on a lesser known artist’s track. As of right now, you can find him on the newest Silk Sonic project, An Evening with Silk Sonic.
