British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks is back with a new single. “Softly” is her first release since her 2021 debut album.
It’s been an entire year since we last heard new music from Arlo Parks. Can you believe it?! Me neither! Well, it’s true. Last year, the singer released her powerful debut album Collapsed in Sunbeams, which gave us hits such as “Too Good” and “Hope.” Now, after a well-deserved break, Arlo is back with new music to share.
Arlo Shows Her Fragile Side on “Softly”
“Softly” is a smooth yet tragic song that talks about knowing when a relationship is coming to an end, and you confront your partner to talk about it. “The pressure thuds behind my eyes. You look at me as if it’s my fault that we’re stood here…I must admit I wanted you to save me. Now I’m sat on the ground, feeling half crazy. I don’t want you to go,” Arlo sings in the second verse.
“‘Softly” is a song about yearning,” Arlo says. About how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you’re still desperately in love. The song is about how it feels to brace yourself before the blow of a break up and reminisce about the days where it all felt luminous.”
The visuals for the song take us on a time-travel trip where we can see Arlo feeling lost in a big city. Directors Zhang and Knight explain, “For us ‘Softly’ explored the idea of wanting something that was once perfect to end in a gentle way, and we wanted to express this using the world surrounding Arlo. We were instinctively drawn to the warm toned, hazy nostalgia of the 1960’s, as we loved the idea of something universally romantic being slowly stripped away throughout the film.”
