Dove Cameron Breaks Gender Norms on “Breakfast” Video

Singer-songwriter and actress Dove Cameron released the music video for her latest single “Breakfast,” delivered earlier this summer.

Dove is Making Her Music Matter

Back in June, Dove surprised the world by releasing “Breakfast,” the follow-up to her radio hit single “Boyfriend.” Nevertheless, both tracks speak about two wholly different things. While “Boyfriend” is fiery, and expresses Dove’s feelings about letting a girl she likes and that she could be a better boyfriend than the one she has. In “Breakfast,” she takes power over men, letting them know that she will be the leader in the relationship.

Now that the “Breakfast” video is out, we can fully see what Dove’s vision was when writing the song. As we know, this summer we went through the really sad news that the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade, a decision that took away women’s right to abortion in a handful of states in the United States.

It has been a topic that we as a country have been talking about since, as it is a step back that we are taking as a society. In the music video for “Breakfast,” Dove speaks up about this issue and makes us see what it really means for women.

The “Breakfast” Music Video Speaks About Current Issues

Throughout the video, gender roles are flipped. We see Dove as a powerful businesswoman who is not afraid of anything. In the other hand, men are weaker, taking jobs like waiters and even going to the doctor because the clothes they were wearing provoked women. But right after the Supreme Court makes that harsh decision, these roles go back to what they used to be.

“I was feeling incredibly disillusioned watching the recent SCOTUS ruling and I couldn’t wrap my head around making a music video at a time when I felt so desolate,” Dove says. “With this video, I want to show the disturbing contrast between stylized femininity and masculine power and the gender stereotypes that plague our social commentary. I want the audience to notice how strange it is to watch the roles be reversed and it was important to highlight how ingrained these roles really are in our nervous systems.”

“This is a video to remind us that ‘how it’s always been’ should never be a reason for desensitization or upholding broken systems. Hopefully, by re-contextualizing these familiar scenes, this video will encourage people to vote for a world where we leave gender discrimination as a thing of the past and stop bringing the past into the present.”

As a woman, I certainly appreciate Dove using her platforms to speak up about this issue that we’re all sadly facing. Take a look at it and let us know your thoughts!
