New Song and Video From Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran always releases new music when we need it the most. It’s been 18 months since we last listened to a new song from him since his No. 6 Collaborations Project album. On December 21st, the British singer gave us exactly what we were craving for in ‘Afterglow,’ a brand new single.
Along with the single, Ed released the official performance video of the song the same day. In it, we can see Ed playing his guitar and singing the song along. There is a beautiful view behind him as he is in the middle of nature surrounded by trees and a gorgeous sunset. It’s a simple video, but it really fits with the vibe of the song.
The Meaning of ‘Afterglow’
The song is an acoustic ballad Ed wrote about his wife, Cherry Seaborn Sheeran. He talks about wanting to live in the moment with her for the rest of his days. “Oh, I won’t be silent and I won’t let go, I will hold on tighter ’til the afterglow, And we’ll burn so bright ’til the darkness softly clears.”
On Instagram, Ed got his fans excited without saying much. The day before the song was released he posted a picture of the single artwork only writing “11am GMT tomorrow. A Christmas present.” The next day, he finally made it official and posted the official performance video of the song, announcing “Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy ! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s.”
The single’s artwork is also meaningful for Sheeran. Last year after he finished touring, he spent one month trying something new, which was painting. He expressed feeling useless after only singing, writing and playing, and doing nothing else for a while, so he decided to give it a try. Little did he know that his painting would, later on, be his own single’s artwork!
