Glass Animals Reimagine Lorde’s “Solar Power”

Glass Animals is having the most successful year in their careers. Their song “Heat Waves” from their third LP Dreamland, hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 fifty-nine weeks after it’s release. Tik Tok was a major player in the song’s virality, helping contribute to the song’s nearly 1.5 billion streams on Spotify. Back in November, Glass Animals first covered Lorde’s “Solar Power” in BBC Radio 1‘s Live Lounge. Now, the cover is available for streaming through Spotify Singles.

Glass Animals Bask in the Glow of “Solar Power”

Lorde’s original instrumentation on the track is minimal, carried by a quiet, strum slapping guitar. Glass Animals add a more rich background to the track with drums and hand claps to lead the beat. They bring life to the pre-chorus with a gospel style choir harmonizing in the background. They take the liberty of adding a chorus after the second verse, which differ’s from Lorde’s original. But it plays on the more lively, electric approach they took with the cover. Although the two versions sound quite different, they both hit like a ray of sunshine.

The band’s Spotify Singles EP also features a live version of “I Don’t Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Dance)” from the deluxe version of Dreamland. The deluxe version of the album features tracks with features from Arlo Parks, Bree Runway, and iann dior. “I Don’t Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Dance)” appears on the FIFA 22 soundtrack. It was released as a single in the middle of “Heat Waves” climb to the top of the charts.

Continuing on their hot streak, Glass Animals were nominated for Best New Artist at this year’s 64th Annual Grammy Awards. The nomination confused many fans since the band had blown up after the release of their debut album, ZABA in 2014. Regardless, Glass Animals are riding the high of their success. They’re out on the road for the Welcome to Dreamland Tour through the summer with festival dates sprinkled in the mix as well.
