English Soul singer-songwriter Joy Crookes launches with the magnificent new song “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now,” serving as the lead single for her forthcoming debut album.
“Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” Highlights Joy’s Soulful Vocals
“Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” is a magical offering that hears Joy’s soulful vocals soar over a rhythmic sound. The powerful single opens up dialogue around the hesitation to stand your ground. The social turmoil and the fine line of privilege between her Bangladeshi-Irish heritage inspire the track.
She comments, “This song is one of the most complicated songs I’ve ever written (in a good way). The track carries with it a deep sense of irony. It’s written from the perspective of someone who finds it easier to remain complicit out of a fear of being canceled. During the social and political turmoil of the last 12 months, performative behavior has become prevalent alongside cancel culture. These two reactions I think are often intertwined. Cancel culture can be a response to half-hearted performatism.”
Her Debut Album is on the Way
“In some sense, you can sympathize with the perspective I’m singing from. Cancel culture is scary, as is re-educating yourself and challenging your friends and families. Ultimately I hope the song encourages people to be a bit braver, whilst the themes are clear in my head the chorus is universal. ‘I got to stand my ground and though I’m down for trying. I am better in denial so I hush don’t make a sound’. Open up a dialogue, speak out, make mistakes – that’s okay and that’s how progress happens.”
“Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” will also be featured on her long-awaited debut album JC1 alongside “Power” and “Anyone But Me”. The album’s release got delayed, but Joy confirmed on Instagram it will be arriving this year. “The first song off my first album will be with you tomorrow… I can’t even believe I’m saying this,” she said prior to the track’s release.
