TikTok’s favorite: Kodoku
TikTok’s Kodoku is becoming a regular name on the platform. However, the small-town North Carolinian is no newbie to music. At a young age Eric Yang, the name behind Kodoku, began playing drums, guitar, and piano. It is this consistent passion for music that explains the recent success of the artist. Last year’s “Hennessey” was Yang’s big breakout. Spreading all throughout TikTok, the single now has over three million views on the app. Despite this, Yang did not let himself be a one-hit-wonder. Soon after, his hit “Rose Bath” took TikTok by storm. Altogether, it is his genre-borrowing alternative take on rap that is what keeps his name alive. Now, Kodoku returns again with his most recent single “So Fine.”
It’s a smooth multi-genre single
Produced by Nick Nash, Kodoku returns to his former “Hennessey” and “Rose Bath” hitmaker. Also a North Carolina native, Nick Nash has put out songs for artists like Fetty Wap and GuapDad4000. His production on Kodoku’s track combines influences from Latin pop with classic trap beats to create a lo-fi, solid single.
With a Spanish guitar and rolling high-hats coming through sonically Kodoku melodically sings over the beat. Lyrically, Kodoku sings of a girl that has him wrapped around his finger. He comes in and out of his falsetto, creating emotional shifts in the track; getting the most delicate on lines like “Tell me lies/Tell me anything/Tell me why you’re my everything.” He is dangerously in love but likes it that way. The tender track is well done, and shares similarities with greats like Post Malone and Justin Beiber.
If you are wanting more music from Kodoku he recently put on Instagram a picture of him in the studio with the caption “what if I dropped 4 songs on y’all..?” Drop down in the comments below what you would love to see from the artist.
