Some Pop Smoke Album History

Born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, Pop Smoke was a rapper, singer, and songwriter. His debut mixtape, Meet the Woo was released in July 2019. Meet the Woo 2 came less than a year later in February, 2020. This became the rapper’s first top- 10 projects in the United States, debuting at number seven on the Billboard 200.

Pop Smokes music became the background for New York City living. It’d probably be impossible to walk farther than 5 blocks without hearing him blasting from a car radio. More specifically, in June 2020, when cities around the country participated in protests and rallies against racial injustices, “Dior” became a protesting anthem.

Pop Smoke’s Legacy in Unifying Through Song

“Dior” comes off Pop Smokes album, Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon. Video clips taken in Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY show masses of people chanting the lyrics to “Dior” as they protest around the city. “Dior” is notably different from most songs sang during times of rebellion, such as Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff,” N.W.A’s “Fuck tha Police,” or Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” However, there is undeniable happiness and unity amongst all that comes out of songs like “Dior” and “Welcome to the Party.” During times of doubt and uncertainty, sometimes the best thing to do for ourselves is find those moments of happiness and unity. What better way is there to unify people than through music? As the world tries too hard to differ and divide us from one another, music is the source that can bring us all together.
