Nilüfer Yanya Unveils “midnight sun”

English singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya released her newest single “midnight sun,” giving fans a taste of her upcoming album, PAINLESS.

The Meaning Behind “midnight sun”

“midnight sun” is a smooth track that symbolizes freedom. Nilüfer shared in a statement, “It’s a song about recognizing what it feels like to be pushed down but wanting to resist. I really like the imagery of ‘midnight sun’ as a lyric; as it insinuates a light guiding you through the darkness. The wings carry their own symbolism—freedom, lightness, flight, fantasy. If I could pick what people saw & heard it would be seeing the beauty of confrontation and the necessity of rebellion.”

“midnight sun” comes with an accompanying video directed by her sister and longtime creative collaborator Molly Daniel. Nilüfer added about the concept, “I was really thinking about your surroundings and how much they influence or change your perception of things. A lot of the city is just grey and concrete, there’s no escape. The video plays on the central theme in the song of no one coming to save you ever. It’s set in the depths of reality in everyday life; where we are the only ones truly capable of salvaging or losing ourselves. Nothing is out there -both a depressing and reassuring statement (depending on how you look at it). Sometimes you have to dress up as a spy or a rock star and just hope for the best.”

Nilüfer’s New Album PAINLESS is Out March 4

Nilüfer had a big year in 2021. She released the follow-up album to 2019’s Miss Universe with a new mini-album named Inside Out in September. With a total of 7 songs, it included singles like “The Florist” and “Small Crimes.” But releasing a new album wasn’t enough for her, and she quickly released the lead single “stabilise” of another upcoming album.

Nilüfer’s newest album, PAINLESS, will be out on March 4 via ATO. Alongside “stabilise,” the album will include the newly-released single “midnight sun” and more unreleased tracks like “the dealer,” “shameless,” and “trouble.”
