Global pop star Shawn Mendes released his latest single “When You’re Gone;” a breakup anthem where he faces the cruel reality of a relationship coming to an end.

Shawn Explains His Breakup With Camila

It’s not a secret that Shawn and Camila Cabello are not a couple anymore. In fact, they both have been very open about it, and even shared that their breakup was mutual and they are still very good friends. Nevertheless, the two have also made it clear that the breakup has been hard for them.

Last month, Camila released her first single since the breakup “Bam Bam,” where she talks about how she’s been feeling since the relationship ended. Fast forward to today, and Shawn is now letting people see inside his feelings as well.

In “When You’re Gone,” Shawn describes how his time with Camila was the happiest of his life. When he knew the relationship was ending, he knew it was for the best; but he still didn’t want to let her go and move on. “Starting to feel like you don’t need me. Wanna believe it’s all for the better. It’s gettin’ real, I’m missing you deeply. So I’m just tryna hold on,” are some of the lyrics in the highly-personal song.

Learning to Support Himself on “When You’re Gone”

Shawn recently took some time to speak with BBC Radio 1 about “When You’re Gone.” I wrote this a couple, like a month after Camilla and I split up,” he said. “It’s interesting because I think after you get over, like, the shock, of just like ‘wow, I’m not gonna see that person every day,’ comes in the way that you realize you were relying on that person. And for me, Camilla was a lot of my support system, and kind of realizing ‘Okay, I’ve gotta be there and cope by myself and for myself, and a lot of that just came through in the song, and… a lot of that is very true to me, and it feels right […] It doesn’t have to stay that way, but it’s nice to get it while it’s there.”

Recently, Shawn released another song about the relationship, “It’ll Be Okay.” Last year, he dropped the single “Summer Af Love” and also joined forces with Camilo for the bilingual track “KESI.”
